Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV)

In 2006, the Village of Mt. Horeb passed an ordinance allowing NEVs to operate on village streets.

In order to be considered an NEV, these vehicles must:

  • have four wheels.
  • have a top attainable speed in one mile of more than 20 mph and not more than 25 mph on a paved level surface.
  • have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 3,000 pounds.
  • be self-propelled by gas or electric power.
  • meet National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and must have a certification label stating that the vehicle meets those standards.

A driver's license and insurance is also required to operate a NEV.
